Representatives of Rio Tinto said during a town meeting in Ljubovija, where Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic met with locals on Sept. 7, that they put the safety of all people working in their mines and living near them first, so that the water, soil and natural environment remained safe.
"But the greatest challenge for us is to win the trust of you who live here. I understand that Rio Tinto has not won the trust of everyone in Serbia yet and one of the reasons why I am here is to convey to you our promises as a reflection of our dedication," said Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm.
Listing off the company's promises, he stressed that he would personally keep an eye out for and call to account every company employee or contractor on the Jadar project as they would be involved in building a modern underground mine, safe for all inhabitants and the environment. He also said that those who were engaged in building the mine would "live in Loznica, eat local food, drink local water," and that he supported the local community's oversight of company activities in the mine's construction and operation "as of this moment."
