Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Oct. 10 the signing, on next Wednesday (Oct. 16), “a significant energy agreement” with the American company UGTR that, in his words, will solve the issue of Serbia’s electricity supply for the next few years.

Vucic said after a meeting with the U.S. undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy and the environment, Jose Fernandez, that he expected the trade between the two countries to exceed 1.4 billion dollars, which, as he stressed, is the highest so far in bilateral relations.

“Our economic cooperation and trade, despite the territorial distance, is advancing significantly. We expect it to reach a historical record this year and, according to our account, it amounted to almost 900 million euros in the first eight months,” Vucic stated at a joint news conference at the Palace Serbia in Belgrade.

He also said that a contract on strategic cooperation in energy had been signed with the U.S. and that he and the American official discussed the utilization of mineral resources and lithium. “We view the existence of mineral raw materials as a great opportunity for further development and economic advance, but it is necessary to fulfill all the conditions. I have said that we would make the final decision after considering all the studies, and that we believed that it was possible, with American assistance, to secure the highest level of environment protection, the full protection of people,” the president stated.
