In a testimonial for the Oct. 29 edition of the Danas daily, Kosovska Mitrovica lawyer Milos Subotic spoke of his violent abuse at the hands of Kosovo police as well as his continued fear for his life and the lives of his family.
“While they were beating me, other police officers passed by, some of whom even laughed at what was going on in the room [I was in]. The room had no cameras [and] the police officers’ badges were covered so their service IDs couldn’t be seen. I wasn’t provided with an attorney or even told why I was taken into custody,” Subotic said.
After making his ordeal public, Subotic says he has been contacted by other citizens who have had problems with Kosovo law enforcement.
According to Subotic, the police took him in for questioning after he moved some bags from a public surface next to a newly-opened store so he could access the pedestrian trail there. His action, he says, was clearly justified given that the same bags were removed the following day, clearing up the area.
Kosovo police have denied that Subotic was physically assaulted. In response, Subotic has said he will report his case to the Kosovo Police Inspectorate.
