In the wake of the Nov. 1 Novi Sad Railway Station accident which claimed 14 lives, Construction, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Goran Vesic cannot be the only one to hand in his resignation, Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said on Nov. 7, adding that the presidency and steering committee of the Serbian Progressive Party will convene to discuss political accountability on Nov. 8.
Speaking for the RTS public service, Vucevic stated that his government is not shying away from political accountability, recalling that, despite bearing no personal responsibility, Vesic has already resigned because he is aware of his political accountability due to the accident occurring within his ministry’s purview.
The prime minister went on to insist that no one, however, would be resigning “just because some thugs demand it or threaten to demolish and burn.”
In his opinion, the prosecutors and forensic experts investigating the collapse of the railway station’s overhang have a difficult job ahead of them.
“We need to determine what led to the collapse of the structure. Was it the result of action or inaction? Whose and what kind? These are the ultimate answers we are seeking,” Vucevic explained, adding that his regime is not trying to avoid political accountability.
