Former Belgrade University dean and one of the founders of the ProGlas (ProVote) initiative Ivanka Popovic said on Jan. 6 that the current university student movement in Serbia will enter the country’s history books as a significant social and political event.

Speaking for the holiday issue of the Nova daily, Popovic expressed her belief that the entire academic community comprehends the importance of showing solidarity with and support for the students at this time, and that their place is side-by-side with the protesting youth. “And it is our duty to support them in leading and at one point bringing to a close the blockades in a way that will demonstrate that humaneness and justice have not completely vanished from this country. The professors who don’t understand this are not worthy of their titles,” she said.

The academic went on to state that the attempts made to discredit the protesting university students are “pathetic” and have achieved the opposite effect. “The public reacted with outrage to the obvious use of security services in harassing the students and their families,” Popovic concluded.

Speaking about the activities of ProVote, Popovic said that the initiative has proposed an initial 18 measures for fundamentally altering Serbia’s society and facing the repercussions of years of abuse and misuse of the state and its resources.
