Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Jan. 14 called on the opposition to request, what he called an advisory referendum on his presidency for to establish the support he enjoyed among the citizens.
On his Instagram, Vucic ironically wrote that “the objective and unbiased Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability (CRTA)” has published that a vast majority of Serbia’s citizens wanted to see him resign. If CRTA’s allegations are true, it will be impossible for me to remain the President of Serbia and therefore the opposition parties need to hand in a motion with 67 signatures out of more than 80 they have for holding an advisory referendum on my presidency, Vucic wrote.
Vucic also said he had always been listening to the people and would not hold his position for another day, if he did not enjoy the support of the people.
Srdjan Milivijevic, the leader and MP of the Democratic Party, has told BETA that this type of referendum is not envisaged by the Constitution, stressing that Vucic should step down immediately.
Zdravko Ponos, the leader and MP of Serbia Center party (SRCE), has described Vucic’s suggestion as farce and an attempt to divert attention from the rebellion of students and people in general. He added that a solution to the ongoing political crisis would be relieving Vucic of his duties by the Serbian Parliament.
