Milorad Grcic: Partisan Director a Step Backward

The head of the Belgrade municipality of Obrenovac and former acting CEO of Serbia’s state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) Milorad Grcic has been arrested in a crackdown on corruption.

Grcic was taken into custody on a warrant issued by Belgrade’s Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office. Along with several associates, he is suspected of mishandling the company during his time at the helm of EPS.

According to Feb. 12 media reports, about a dozen people have been arrested alongside Grcic.

Grcic was appointed acting CEO of EPS on March 15, 2016. Although he was initially hired temporarily, i.e. until the competition for the position of CEO was closed, Grcic held the position for nearly six years.

He stepped down as CEO in January 2022, after a series of catastrophic accidents caused by low-quality coal resulted in the shut-down of almost all EPS production blocks and left 130.000 households without power for days.

Several days after leaving the power utility, Grcic was appointed as an assistant to the head of the Obrenovac municipality and was elected to the latter position in July 2024.
