Higher Court(BETAPHOTO/MILAN TIMOTIC)
The special anti-corruption division of the Higher Public Prosecution in Belgrade has raised an indictment against Slobodanka K., the manager for investment development of the Infrastruktura Zeleznice Srbije AD company, against the president of the technical review commission of the Novi Sad railway station, Milutin S., and a member of the commission, Biljana K., for several crimes with elements of corruption, which had as consequence the collapse of the concrete canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad on Nov. 1, 2024, when 15 people were killed and two seriously injured.
The chief prosecutor of the Higher Public Prosecution, Nenad Stefanovic, has indicated that grounded suspicion existed about their omissions having contributed to and being in a causal relation with the mentioned tragedy because, had they acted conscientiously and performed the extraordinary inspection and control of fulfillment of conditions during the trial operation, they would have visually observed the signs of breakage and sagging of the canopy in the days that preceded the tragedy.
Slobodanka K. is accused of the crimes “abuse of official position” and “grave act against general safety.” Milutin S. and Biljana K. are accused of the crime “incompetent performance of duty” and “grave act against general safety.”
Stefanovic has announced that commission members Jelena V. and Marija N.J. had been acquitted, since there was no evidence that they had performed any criminal act that is prosecuted by virtue of office.
According to the chief prosecutor, the corruptive element in this case is reflected in the failure to perform the task of supervision and failure to perform an official duty, and the crimes “incompetent performance of duty” and “abuse of official position” represent the so-called corruptive crimes.
