Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade (BETAPHOTO/Ana Slovic)
On Aug. 14, in response to the nighttime riots of Aug. 13, Serbia’s High Prosecutor’s Office called on all relevant lower-tier prosecutor’s offices to fully and without fail exercise their legal authority to deescalate the situation in the country and restore public peace and order.
“The human rights and freedoms prescribed by the Constitution and laws, along with the inviolability of living and work space, must be respected without exception,” the High Prosecutor’s Office warned.
“Attacks on these principles and rights, especially attacks on authorized police, public prosecutor’s office or court personnel will not only not be tolerated but will incur immediate and decisive criminal or misdemeanor charges in keeping with the law,” the Office concluded.
