Alain Berset, the general secretary of the Council of Europe, voiced concern on Aug. 15 over the violent protests in Serbia, which have resulted in dozens being injured, and said the Serbian government must abide by CoE standards.
"I call for calm and respect of the right to peaceful assembly," Berset said in a social media post, adding that "Serbian authorities must uphold Council of Europe standards" because "the rule of law and respect for human rights must prevail."
Michael O'Flaherty, CoE commissioner for human rights, condemned the disproportionate use of force by the Serbian police in Valjevo.
"I'm closely following events in Serbia, where human rights concerns persist," O'Flaherty said in a social media post, in which he called "on the authorities to avoid excessive force, end arbitrary arrests, and de-escalate the situation."
