Dubravka Djedovic, Peter Szijjarto, Budapest, April 20 2023 (BETAPHOTO/MINISTRY OF MINING AND ENERGY OF SERBIA/Emilija Jovanovic)
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced in Belgrade on Nov. 26 that his country has reached “a political agreement” with Serbia to help supply the country with fuel and that the “technical details” would be fleshed out during the day.
“I just agreed with [Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric on the most important political issues. He authorized me to hammer out the technical elements of this political agreement with Dubravka Djedovic, [Serbia’s] energy minister, over the course of today,” Szijjarto stated at a joint press conference with Djuric.
The Hungarian minister added that “Serbia can always count on Hungary and that [the country] will do everything in its power to [ensure] Serbia has enough fuel.”
The agreement comes amidst threats to Serbia’s energy sector because of the U.S. sanctions against Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), a multinational oil and gas company majority-owned by Russia. At present, the NIS oil refinery in Pancevo faces imminent shutdown unless its supply of crude oil is renewed.
