The Association of Prosecutor's of Serbia said in a press release on May 6 that it will not take part in public hearings on amendments to a recently adopted set of judicial laws as the wording of the legislation was never finalized.

The statement adds that the Association had accepted participation in the working group for amending the judicial laws despite reservations, in the interest of aligning the legislation with the recommendations of the Venice Commission, and that it had submitted proposed amendments that would involve the reinstatement of regulations in force from May 2023, before the so-called Mrdic Laws were implemented.

The statement goes on to note that the Association had proposed amendments in line with the recommendations of the Venice Commission for provisions that require new normative solutions, and advocated their consistent application by the working group. However, the statement read, the group's work to date indicates that such an approach is not fully accepted by all members, which is why the Association believes the will to carry out all recommendations is not fully present.

The statement underscored that the finalization of the wording of the legislation should have preceded the public hearing scheduled for May 6 to ensure a transparent and meaningful debate. Despite its decision not to take part in the public hearing, the Association will remain a part of the working group, the statement read.
