The Serbian Electric Power Company (EPS) announced on Aug. 7 that testing was under way of the equipment in the new B3 block of the Kostolac B thermal power plant, ahead of the test run, which envisages operating on the grid at full power for 168 hours, with the aim of demonstrating that all systems are fully operational.

“The next steps will be warranty tests to show the functional characteristics of the block, after which conditions will have been met for EPS to receive this newly built 350-megawatt block in October and make it a new (production) capacity in our energy portfolio,” the general director of EPS, Dusan Zivkovic, stated during an inspection of the B3 block.

He stated that, judging by equipment quality, level of environment protection, system safety and grid connections, block B3 fulfilled high standards of quality. “After commissioning, we expect to have the best block – according to parameters and quality – in the electric energy system of Serbia,” Zivkovic said.

A member of the Supervisory Board of EPS, Dejan Ostojic, has stated that block B3 was a huge step, not just for EPS, but also for the energy security of Serbia and all consumers, particularly because that is the largest block constructed in several decades. He added that the launching of this block would create 160 new jobs for the next few decades.
