The stretch of the Milos the Great highway from Pakovrace to Pozega fully opened for traffic on July 6, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced.

According to announcements, driving on this section of highway will be free of charge until July 15. The newly opened section, whose construction began in May 2019, is 19.56 kilometers long and includes two of Serbia's longest road tunnels -- Laz and Munjino Brdo, each approximately three kilometers in length.

Representatives of the ruling party in Serbia, the Serbian Progressive Party, emphasized in all of their media appearances on July 5 that the completion of this section of highway means that "more highways and high-speed motorways" had been built in Serbia in the last 12 years "than in the previous 67." Earlier, media outlets reported that engineers in charge of inspecting the Pozega-Pakovrace stretch had refused to sign a construction inspection report or sign off on a list of incomplete works.

According to Insajder, the engineers unanimously refused to sign the documents, which are required to attest the completion of the section, after which a technical review commission would need to issue a favorable report before the stretch can be opened for trial use. Vucic dismissed reports that the stretch was not built in accordance with regulations or that it was hazardous, while multiple opposition party representatives criticized the opening of the road and demanded that the responsible authorities immediately make the necessary documentation public.
