Society Facing New Tensions

Recent statements by Serbia’s top officials indicate that the government of Aleksandar Vucic had decided to reactivate a lithium mining project in the west of the country, which was started by the Rio Tinto company. This confirms suspicions that the government was not telling the truth in January 2022 when, under the pressure of mass demonstrations, it announced that it had “put an end” to the Jadar project. The activation, or rather continuation of the project’s realization, has the potential to significantly raise tensions in society which could result in physical clashes.
