Branislav Lecic, an expelled member of the Democratic Party, described as "political" a decision by the Ministry of State Administration and Local Self-Government to refuse his request to take over the leading party post, the rationale behind it being that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic "doesn't want the status of the opposition to change."

As reported on Feb. 22, the Ministry dismissed Lecic's request to register as the party's agent.

"Clearly it's a political decision. This rift within the opposition suits Vucic - he prefers the opposition that's unlikely to merge discontent into a serious challenge to the ruling regime," Lecic said to BETA on Feb. 22, adding that by keeping the opposition as it is Vucic "keeps control" as well.

The expelled Democrat said the Ministry's ruling confirmed that "there are no Vucic's men in the part of the Democratic Party" he's leading. Lecic promised to "continue to fight for the party", explaining that at a session of the party's main board on Feb. 28 a decision should be made on "further political actions" by the Democrats.
