Belgrade University Rector Ivanka Popovic has said commenting on Prime Minister Ana Brnabic’s statement that the doctoral thesis of Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali should not be retroactively appraised, that there is no statute of limitations on plagiarism and that thus, reviewing the authenticity of the said thesis cannot be considered a retroactive process.

“The authenticity of a thesis written a hundred years ago can be scrutinized in the same way as the authenticity of an old painting,” said Popovic in the Impression of the Week show on Nova S TV.

Speaking about the process of determining authenticity of Mali’s doctoral thesis, which has been taking five years, Popovic said that in time this case has gone beyond the academic circles, becoming a topic of public discourse and, thus, it is harder now to find people who would join the expert commission.

This is not good, according to Popovic, who also said that the only “dignified way” of dealing with this issue is to let the experts have their say.
