Representatives of Serbia and the European Union (EU) signed in Belgrade, on July 19, a Memorandum of Understanding on a strategic partnership on sustainable raw materials, battery value chains and electric vehicles.
The document was signed by Serbia's Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic and the European Commission’s vice president , who is also the Commissioner for Interinstitutional Relations and Strategic Foresight Maros Sefcovic, in the presence of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Prior to the signing, a Raw Materials Summit 2024 was held. Scholz and Sefcovic stated that lithium mining in Serbia would be conducted in accordance with the highest global environmental standards, and that it would bring Serbia significant foreign investments, promising economic prospects, and a large number of new jobs.
Following the signing of the Memorandum, the EU and Serbia will jointly develop a "roadmap" within six months for specific actions in implementing the Strategic Partnership in practice, according to the European Commission.
