Ukrainian Ambassador to Serbia Volodymyr Tolkach said on Aug. 24 that Serbia could help in the process of sending Ukrainian children deported to Russia back home.
In an interview with the Blic daily on Ukrainian Independence Day on Aug. 24, the ambassador said the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia was a very sensitive and painful situation for Ukraine, which had been fighting off neighboring Russia's invasion for over two years.
"We are making a suggestion to Serbian officials to act as intermediaries in this situation, because we see the potential that you have. Not only does Serbia have good relations with Russia, but it is also a European country with direct flights to Russia, and in this case, you have centers that can temporarily accommodate our citizens, who can use these flights to come to Serbia," Tolkach explained.
The ambassador also said that some Ukrainian families had been separated, and that the children, as Ukrainian citizens, could not go back, and were now under strong Russian propagandistic pressure. Speaking about the peace summit on Ukraine in Switzerland, Tolkach underlined that he appreciated Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric's participation in the conference and his signing of the first document adopted during the summit.
