In the evening on Feb. 24, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he believed Serbia had made a mistake by voting in favor of a resolution backed by the European nations in the UN General Assembly affirming support to Ukraine and its territorial integrity, stressing that Belgrade should have abstained from voting.

“I think Serbia made a mistake today, I apologize to the citizens for that. I take the blame for it myself because I am probably tired and burdened and cannot get everything done,” Vucic told TV Happy.

Marking the third anniversary of the Russian invasion on Ukraine, the UN General Assembly on Feb. 24 adopted two resolutions on Ukraine – one drafted by Ukraine and its European allies, and the other tabled by the US, which was passed only after undergoing many amendments, leading to the US abstaining.

Vucic said that Serbia had abstained from voting on the American resolution, noting “we voted exactly as it should have been,” adding that “we should have abstained, in my opinion, from the European resolution as well.”

“As you can see, I am saying this at a time when it is quite clear that I will lose favor or political points in the EU because of this. I believe that Serbia had to abstain. I have no one else to blame but myself, I had not had the time to pay enough attention to this matter,” Vucic explained.

He also said that Serbia had sustained three years “under the most difficult circumstance” for not imposing sanctions against Russia, adding that this Serbia’s position “will not be demolished by one, two or three resolutions.”
