Zoran Stojiljkovic, retired professor of the Belgrade Faculty of Political Sciences, has said that the student movement has caused “a political earthquake” in Serbia, while students have managed to reach almost all members of the society during months of protests and their numerous actions.

He told the Sept. 23 issue of Belgrade daily list Danas that young people were not apathetic, adding that they had managed to develop skills and a new form of political culture. “Over the past 10 months, they have learned more about democracy than previous generations in decades. Their strength is driven by their sense of pride and their perseverance,” Stojiljkovic said.

The students’ announcement that they would run in next elections had shaken the regime, while also affecting relations among the opposition ranks, he noted.

Stojiljkovic also said that blocking faculties could not be maintained in the long run because such activities had been exhausting people, suggesting that innovative forms of self-organization should be developed.
