The security situation in Kosovo is calm but fragile, particularly in the north, which is predominantly populated by Serbs, KFOR officials said in a Sept. 9 evening statement.
In a written response to inquiries by koha.net, KFOR’s Office for Information said that the mission is “closely monitoring the situation and maintaining a visible and appropriate presence through regular patrols and engaging with the local communities.”
It was further said that this includes regular patrols throughout Kosovo and along the administrative line with Serbia, as well as joint patrols with Kosovo Police and parallel patrols with Serbian armed forces.
Tensions between the denizens of north Kosovo – who are mostly Serbs – and Kosovo police have been ongoing for quite some time, particularly since local institutions were claimed by the central government following the implementation of the Brussels Agreement and the Serbs’ refusal to participate in local elections.
