Improved drafts of five laws governing the Serbian judiciary, prepared in line with the conclusions adopted at a May 15 meeting between Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujic and experts of the Venice Commission, will be sent to the rapporteurs of the Council of Europe’s advisory body on May 18.

The Parliament of Serbia adopted in January amendments to a set of judicial laws proposed by ruling Serbian Progressive Party MP Ugljesa Mrdic dubbed "Mrdic's Laws" after which the Venice Commission issued recommendations, calling for most of the original legislation to be restored.

Minister Vujic, and his associates, held the online meeting with Venice Commission experts in the capacity of the Working Group in charge of drafting amendments to judicial legislation, formed after the advisory body issued its recommendations. The Working Group and the Commission have focused on alternatives contained in the draft amendments to the Law on Public Prosecution, the Law on the Organization and Jurisdiction of State Authorities in Combating High-Tech Crime, the Law on Seats and Territorial Jurisdictions of Courts and Public Prosecutor's Offices, the Law on Judges and the Law on the High Prosecutorial Council.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Justice, the Venice Commission experts were provided with explanations of certain proposed solutions, as well as alternative proposals. "The participants in the meeting then held discussions aimed at identifying the best legislative solutions that would raise the efficiency of the Serbian judiciary, in line with the Constitution, laws and the recommendations of the Venice Commission’s experts."
