No kind of economic or political pressure on the media is beneficial to democracy, said EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos regarding the leaked conversation between Vladimir Lucic, the director of Serbia’s state-owned telecommunications operator, and United Group CEO Stan Miller, which pertained to outside influences on the media from the Group’s portfolio.
Speaking for N1 TV about Serbia’s media, Kos maintained the importance of state institutions enabling and facilitating the work of journalists and providing information to the public, including on the matter of Serbia’s EU integration.
These comments come in response to last week’s published audio-recording of a phone conversation between Miller and Lucic, from which the public learned that Serbia’s regime demanded the removal of Aleksandra Subotic, the CEO of United Media, a subsidiary of United Group. Subotic has spent years defending the independence of the media outlets under her purview: N1, Nova, Danas and Radar.
